Los Ocarros Biopark

Bioparque Los Ocarros, located in Villavicencio, Meta, was opened in 2003 and is exclusively dedicated to the flora and fauna of Colombia's Orinoquía region. Spanning approximately 5.5 hectares, the park provides an immersive look into the biodiversity of the Eastern Plains (Llanos Orientales). The name 'Ocarro' refers to the giant armadillo, one of the region's most iconic and endangered species. The biopark houses around 1,200 animals across 193 species, including jaguars, pumas, anacondas, caimans, and a wide variety of primates and birds. A large natural lake serves as the park's center, surrounded by walking trails that allow visitors to see aquatic life and reptiles in their element. The enclosures are designed to replicate the natural ecosystems of the Llanos, such as gallery forests and savannahs. Beyond its role as a tourist attraction, Los Ocarros is a vital research and educational center, promoting the protection of natural heritage among the local population. It also serves as a key rehabilitation site for wildlife rescued from illegal trafficking, aiming for their eventual return to the wild.
