San Agustín Archaeological Park (Colombia)

Weather…

The San Agustín Archaeological Park, located in the Huila department, contains the world's largest collection of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures. These impressive volcanic stone statues were crafted by a mysterious culture that flourished between the 1st and 8th centuries AD. The sculptures depict human figures with animalistic features as well as abstract beings, likely serving religious functions and burial rites. The park spans a vast area featuring burial mounds, artificial terraces, and stone pathways. Notably, the 'Fuente de Lavapatas' is a complex system of channels and figures carved directly into a rocky streambed, believed to have been used for ritual ablutions. Despite extensive research, much regarding the origins and eventual disappearance of the San Agustín culture remains unknown. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 and is considered one of the most significant archaeological testimonies of pre-Columbian America.
