The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in the Tibet Autonomous Region is the deepest and one of the longest canyons in the world, significantly deeper than the Grand Canyon in the United States. It stretches for 504.6 kilometers and reaches a maximum depth of approximately 6,009 meters. The canyon wraps around the massive Namcha Barwa peak (7,782 m), where the Yarlung Tsangpo River makes a sharp horseshoe bend before flowing into India to become the Brahmaputra. This region is regarded as one of Earth's most isolated and pristine ecosystems, featuring climatic zones that range from subtropical at the valley floor to arctic at the surrounding summits. Due to its extreme terrain, the canyon remained largely unexplored for centuries and was only officially confirmed as the world's deepest in the 1990s. The area hosts unique biodiversity, including many endemic species of plants and animals. For explorers and scientists, the canyon remains one of the last great geographical mysteries due to its near-impenetrable accessibility.

Getting there
Access is typically via the city of Nyingchi in Tibet. From Nyingchi Mainling Airport, visitors reach the scenic area conveniently by shuttle buses or organized private vehicles and tours.

Best season
The best time to visit is from May to October. In late autumn, October and November, the views of the peaks are often clearest as the monsoon clouds disperse over the Himalayan mountain ranges.

This is the deepest canyon in the world with extreme vertical relief. The terrain is very rugged; paths range from well-maintained boardwalks to steep, primitive trails in the remote sections.

What to bring
High-altitude gear with warm layers and UV-rated sunglasses is essential. Sturdy trekking boots and perhaps oxygen canisters are recommended for those sensitive to the thin Himalayan mountain air.

Large, managed parking lots are available at the main entrance to the scenic area. From there, internal eco-buses transport visitors to the various viewing platforms along the deep canyon walls.

Altitude sickness is a serious risk; acclimatize in Nyingchi before heading to the canyon. Weather can change instantly, and some areas are prone to rockfalls, so always follow marked tourist paths.
