Monywa lies on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River in the Sagaing Region, 136 kilometres west of Mandalay, with around 380,000 inhabitants. During British Burma (1886-1948) it was an important trading town and a hub between India and central Burma. The town's most famous landmark is the Bodhi Tataung complex 20 kilometres to the east, where since 2008 the 116-metre standing Buddha Laykyun Setkyar - the second tallest Buddha statue in the world - has dominated the landscape, alongside a 95-metre reclining Buddha. The 14th-century Thanboddhay Pagoda houses more than 580,000 Buddha images on its inner walls. Nearby lie the Letpadaung and Sabe-Tegyin copper mines, Myanmar's largest, the site of violent protests since 2012. The surrounding plain is a major centre of cotton and sesame cultivation.
