Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Chatthin Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Sagaing Region of northern Myanmar and was originally established in 1941 during the British colonial administration. It covers an area of approximately 268 square kilometers (103 sq mi) and is characterized by dry deciduous dipterocarp forests, locally known as Indaing forests. The sanctuary's primary mission is the protection of Eld's deer (Panolia eldii thamin), and it holds one of the largest remaining populations of this subspecies in the world. In addition to the deer, the area supports over 200 bird species, rhesus macaques, and various reptiles. Collaborative research projects, notably with the Smithsonian Institution, have established Chatthin as a key site for long-term ecological monitoring in Southeast Asia. Despite its protected status, the sanctuary faces threats from agricultural encroachment and illegal logging, prompting community-based conservation efforts. Regular ranger patrols are conducted to minimize poaching and safeguard critical breeding habitats. Preserving Chatthin is essential for maintaining the regional biodiversity and the survival of species unique to Myanmar's dry zones.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season, running generally from November to April, provides the most favorable conditions for exploring the Sagaing Region. During these months, the vegetation is sparser, making it considerably easier to spot the endemic Burmese Eld's deer in its natural habitat.
🌅
Best time of day
Wildlife activity usually peaks during the early morning hours just after sunrise and again in the late afternoon before dusk. These transitional periods offer the best lighting for photography and a higher chance of seeing the deer grazing actively in the clearings.
📜
Etiquette
Strict conservation guidelines apply to protect the endangered Eld's deer, requiring visitors to stay on designated trails. Flash photography, loud conversations, and approaching the animals are strictly forbidden to ensure the fragile population remains undisturbed.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars or a camera with a telephoto lens is crucial for getting clear views of the shy deer species. Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral tones, along with sturdy hiking shoes and sun protection, will help you navigate the terrain comfortably.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary is situated in a relatively isolated part of the Sagaing Region, meaning roads may be unpaved or rough in certain sections. Hiring a knowledgeable local driver or utilizing a guided tour service from a nearby town is often the most reliable way to arrive safely.
🦌
What to expect
The Eld's deer is naturally elusive and its population is limited, making every sighting a rare and special event. Patience is absolutely essential; be prepared to spend extended periods quietly waiting near clearing edges or known water sources for a chance to glimpse them.
