Léré is a significant town in southwestern Chad, located in the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest Province near the border with Cameroon. The town is situated on the shores of Lake Léré, which, together with nearby Lake Tréné, forms an ecologically valuable wetland area. Léré is the historical and cultural heartland of the Mundang people and serves as the seat of the Gong Léré, the traditional ruler of the Mundang. The local economy is driven by fishing, agriculture, and increasingly by the cultivation of cotton for export. Geographically, its position along the Mayo Kébbi river, a tributary of the Benue, hydrologically connects the region to the Niger Basin. Culturally, Léré is famous for its traditional festivals and the well-preserved earthen architecture of its royal palace. Due to its proximity to the frontier, Léré is an important hub for cross-border trade with Cameroon. In recent decades, the town has developed into a major administrative and educational center in the province, while the conservation of biodiversity in the Lake Léré basin remains a key focus.
