Koh Thmei

Koh Thmei is a densely forested island located inside Ream National Park in Preah Sihanouk province. The island remains largely undeveloped, providing a tranquil refuge for nature enthusiasts. It is fringed by mangrove swamps and features deserted sandy beaches shaded by palm and pine trees, particularly along the eastern coast. The shallow waters surrounding the island are excellent for swimming and snorkeling, with nearby reefs and seagrass beds supporting diverse marine life. Over 150 different bird species inhabit Koh Thmei, making the island a prime location for birdwatching. In addition to birds, visitors with a bit of luck can spot monkeys, civets, and occasionally even dolphins in the coastal waters. The lack of extensive infrastructure means there are no paved roads or large resort complexes here, preserving the island's rustic appeal. The journey to the island begins on the mainland at the fishing village of Koh Kchhang, situated near Sihanoukville Airport. From there, a small local boat ferries visitors to the island, taking about an hour. Because tourist facilities are highly limited on the island, travelers should ensure they bring sufficient cash and any essential supplies with them.
