Ta Som (Cambodia)

Weather…

Ta Som is a small but fascinating temple in the northeastern part of the Angkor Archaeological Park, built in the late 12th century under King Jayavarman VII. It follows the Bayon style typical of that era and was likely dedicated to the King's father. The temple consists of a central structure enclosed by three concentric laterite walls. Ta Som is particularly famous for its eastern gopura (entrance tower), which is completely entwined by the roots of a giant strangler fig tree (Ficus religiosa). This iconic sight illustrates the power of nature reclaiming stone monuments over centuries. The complex features four artistically decorated face towers, similar to the Bayon temple but on a smaller scale. In 1998, extensive restoration work was carried out to stabilize the structure while preserving the vegetation in critical areas to maintain its unique atmosphere.
