Kirirom National Park (Cambodia)

Weather…

Kirirom National Park, officially titled Preah Suramarit-Kossamak National Park, is situated in the Cardamom Mountains of southwestern Cambodia. It is uniquely famous for its high-altitude plateau, rising to about 700 meters above sea level, which supports the country's only natural high-density pine forests. The name 'Kirirom' translates to 'Happy Mountain,' a name bestowed upon it by King Monivong in the 1940s. During the 1960s, the park was developed as a premier hill station for the Cambodian elite, and remnants of royal villas still dot the landscape today. The environment gives a distinct microclimate with significantly cooler temperatures, scenic waterfalls, and mist-covered valleys. Biodiversity in the park includes various deer species and a wide array of tropical birds. Geologically, the sandstone plateau acts as a critical watershed for the surrounding lowlands. Currently, it serves as a major recreational escape for residents of Phnom Penh and a hub for community-based ecotourism and conservation education.
