Phnom Aural

Phnom Aural is the highest peak in Cambodia, reaching an elevation of 1,813 meters above sea level within the eastern Cardamom Mountains. Located in Kampong Speu Province, the mountain is the centerpiece of the Phnom Aural Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers over 250,000 hectares of protected land. The peak is shrouded in dense evergreen rainforest, housing a vast array of biodiversity including rare birds, primates, and historically, the Indochinese tiger. Climbing the mountain is an arduous task that typically requires a multi-day trek through steep, rugged terrain and thick jungle cover. At the summit, a modest Buddhist shrine stands as a site of spiritual significance for local pilgrims and adventurous hikers. Geologically composed mainly of granite, the massif serves as a critical watershed for the region, feeding numerous streams that support the agriculture and ecosystems of the lowlands below.
