Phanom Rung Historical Park is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Thailand. A Khmer temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano in Buriram Province. It is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Famous for a phenomenon where the sun shines perfectly through all 15 doorways. Constructed of sandstone and laterite. This landmark is part of the cultural heritage of Thailand, often linked to Buddhist temples, wats and royal architecture. The entire Khmer temple complex can be explored on foot, allowing visitors to enter the ancient sanctuaries and walk along the impressive processional walkways.

Photography is widely permitted throughout the ruins. The long laterite paths, imposing stone gates, and intricate Shiva carvings provide phenomenal architectural framing.
Time needed
Plan to spend around two to three hours wandering through the expansive site, taking the time to climb the volcanic rim stairs and examine the detailed sandstone lintels.

Combine this visit with the nearby Muang Tum sanctuary, another beautifully restored but quieter Khmer site located just at the base of the same extinct volcano.
Getting there
Located in Buriram Province, the park is most easily reached by renting a car or hiring a local driver from the city of Nang Rong, as public transport routes are limited.

Wear sturdy walking shoes to navigate the uneven stone paving safely. Also, pack ample water and a wide hat, as the midday sun on the exposed volcanic plateau can be intense.
