Banteay Chhmar (Cambodia)

Weather…

Banteay Chhmar is a sprawling temple complex in northwestern Cambodia, near the Thai border, built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. It is one of the largest Angkorian sites, yet remains largely unrestored and overgrown. The temple is famous for its intricate bas-reliefs, including a remarkable depiction of the 'Buddha of Compassion' with four arms, carved from a single block of sandstone. The complex originally covered over 1.5 km² and included a large baray (reservoir) and several satellite temples. Unlike the highly visited Angkor Wat, Banteay Chhmar provides a raw, explorer-like experience but poses challenges such as limited accessibility and landmines. The site is on Cambodia's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status. Its architecture reflects Mahayana Buddhist iconography and features extensive galleries with scenes of daily life and military processions.
