Mount Teza is one of the highest and most impressive peaks in western Burundi, located within the boundaries of Kibira National Park. Reaching an elevation of approximately 2,665 meters, it stands as a central pillar of the Congo-Nile divide. The slopes of Teza are world-renowned for their vast tea plantations, which produce some of the highest-quality tea in East Africa. The mountain plays a critical role in the regional ecosystem, as its mist-covered montane forests serve as a vital watershed for surrounding river systems. Botanically, the area is a biodiversity hotspot, home to rare ferns, orchids, and various primate species. Historically, Teza has been a key site for highland agricultural development since the colonial era. The cool, damp climate at the summit features a sharp contrast to the sweltering heat of the African Rift Valley floor below. For hikers, the journey through tea fields and ancient forests provides an unparalleled natural experience in one of Burundi's greenest regions.

Getting there

Mount Teza is located in northwestern Burundi and is best reached via the road from Bujumbura toward Kayanza. Access is provided by winding mountain roads that pass through scenic tea plantations into the higher elevations.

Best season

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from June to August and from December to January. During these months, the paths are more accessible, and the cool mountain air provides a pleasant relief from the humid lowlands.

Terrain & paths

The terrain at Mount Teza is characterized by steep relief and a hilly upland landscape. Narrow paths often lead through dense mountain rainforest or along extensive tea fields, requiring sure-footedness on the uneven ground.

What to bring

Sturdy hiking boots are very important for the slippery paths in the forest. Since it can be significantly cooler at this altitude than in the rest of the country, a light jacket or sweater should be carried even in sunny weather.

Parking

Organized parking lots are scarce; vehicles are usually left at the edges of tea plantations or in small settlements after consulting with locals. It is highly recommended to hire a local driver who knows the area for the journey.

Safety

Due to the remote location, hikes should preferably be undertaken in the company of a local guide. Pay close attention to the ground conditions after rainfall, as the paths can then become extremely slippery and difficult to traverse.

Time needed

A full day should be planned for the journey and a hike through the tea fields and forests. While a shorter visit allows for some beautiful views, it hardly does justice to the tranquility and diversity of this special ecosystem.
