Ruins of Loropéni (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Ruins of Loropéni, located in southwestern Burkina Faso near the Ivory Coast border, are the best-preserved example of a fortified settlement in West Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of massive stone walls, some reaching a height of six meters, enclosing an area of over 11,000 square meters. Archaeological evidence suggests the site was inhabited as early as the 11th century, though the current structures mainly date from the 14th to 17th centuries. Loropéni was a strategic hub in the trans-Saharan gold trade, controlled by the Lohron and Koulango peoples. The massive dry-stone construction reflects a high level of social organization and sophisticated architectural skill for its time. The settlement was abandoned in the early 19th century but remains a significant symbol of the region's pre-colonial history and power structures. Today, the ruins are a key destination for researchers and cultural tourists interested in medieval African heritage.
