Bontioli Reserve (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Bontioli Reserve is located in the Bougouriba Province of southwestern Burkina Faso and is divided into a total reserve and a partial reserve. Covering an area of approximately 12,700 hectares, it represents the typical Sudanian savanna ecosystem characterized by shea trees and baobabs. The protected area was established to preserve the region's biodiversity, particularly the populations of elephants, buffaloes, and various antelope species like the waterbuck. The reserve's hydrological significance is high as it lies within the Mouhoun River basin, which provides essential watering holes even during the dry season. Human activities are strictly prohibited within the total reserve area, while the partial reserve allows for controlled resource use by local communities. Poaching and the encroachment of agricultural lands continue to be major challenges for the park's management authorities. The reserve also functions as a research site for studying the dynamics of savanna ecosystems under the influence of global climate change.
