Gaoua Hills (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Gaoua Hills are located in the southwest of Burkina Faso in the Poni province and form the cultural and geographical center of the Lobi country. The relief is characterized by dense tree savannas and steep laterite hills located in the more humid Sudanian zone. With an annual rainfall of over 1200 mm, the region is one of the most water-rich in the country, enabling lush vegetation and diverse agriculture. Near Gaoua are the ruins of Loropéni, a UNESCO World Heritage site that bears witness to the former importance of the gold trade in this region. The Lobi culture is closely linked to the hilly landscape, with their traditional fortified houses (sukalas) often built on strategic slopes. Geologically, the region is rich in minerals, particularly gold deposits, which have been mined for centuries. The warm, humid climate and the varied topography make the Gaoua Hills a unique natural space in an otherwise rather flat Burkina Faso.
