💡 Tips
- During peak summer (August), arrive at the chairlift before 8:30 AM to avoid waiting in line for hours.
- The full circuit to see all seven lakes takes 4 to 5 hours. Sturdy hiking boots are required; do not wear sneakers.
- Swimming or dipping your feet in the glacial lakes is strictly forbidden in order to protect the fragile ecosystem.
- Weather above 2000 meters is highly unpredictable. Always pack a windproof and waterproof layer.
🍽 Food
At the Rila Lakes Hut (near the top station), you can often find this traditional fried dough in the morning.
A great way to warm up on the terrace of the main hut after finishing the windy lake circuit.
Bring your own sandwiches and plenty of water, as there are zero shops or food stalls up on the mountain trails.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Purchase all your trail snacks and bottled water down in Sapareva Banya or Panichishte before heading up.
The two highest lakes require a steep climb, making them significantly quieter as many hikers turn back earlier.
Its large grassy shores offer plenty of space to sit and relax away from the main bottleneck trails.
Water temperature…
The Seven Rila Lakes are a series of glacial lakes located in the northwestern Rila Mountains, tiered between 2,100 and 2,500 meters above sea level. Each lake is named after its shape or characteristic: The Tear (highest and clearest), The Eye, The Kidney, The Twin, The Trefoil, The Fish Lake, and The Lower Lake. A chairlift from Pionerska Hut provides easy access to the Rila Lakes Hut, starting point for the most popular trekking routes. The area is also known as a spiritual center for the Universal White Brotherhood, which gathers here every August for their Paneurhythmy ritual dances. Hiking is best from July to September; before July, snow may still cover the higher paths, and the weather can be unpredictable even in summer.
