💡 Tips
- Start your hikes very early in the morning as the mountain weather can change rapidly.
- The Central Mountaineering School (CMS) is the main hub and the best place to ask for current trail conditions.
- Bring plenty of cash with you, as the high-altitude mountain huts do not accept credit cards.
- In winter, the area is a freeride paradise, making avalanche safety gear absolutely essential.

Malyovitsa is widely regarded as the cradle of Bulgarian mountaineering and alpinism. Located in a rugged alpine valley in the northwestern Rila Mountains at 1700 meters, it is home to the central mountain school. Malyovitsa Peak (2729 m), with its dramatic north face, is the most iconic climbing destination in Bulgaria, offering a variety of technical rock and ice climbing routes that attract professionals from all over the region. In winter, Malyovitsa gives a small but challenging ski area with steep slopes that are particularly popular among freeriders and extreme skiers. It is also an excellent starting point for ski touring. Thanks to its high altitude, the snow cover is reliable and often lasts until May. During the summer, the area serves as a base for high-altitude trekking, with paths leading to glacial lakes like Elenino Ezero and eventually to the Rila Monastery. Accommodation is focused around the main hotel and several mountain huts (hizas), fostering a strong sense of community among climbers and hikers. The resort prioritizes nature conservation as it lies within the Rila National Park. Accessible via the village of Govedartsi, Malyovitsa has an unpretentious, high-octane mountain experience for those looking to push their limits.
