Rila Monastery (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan of Rila, this monastery is the spiritual heart of Bulgaria. The current complex was built in the mid-19th century in the National Revival style, characterized by its distinctive striped arches and colonnades. The main church features vivid frescoes depicting biblical scenes and a magnificent gilded iconostasis. The courtyard is dominated by the Hrelio Tower, built in 1335, which remains the oldest structure in the monastery. A highlight of the museum is the Cross of Rafail, a miniature wood carving that took 12 years to complete using a magnifying glass. Tucked away at 1,147 meters in the Rilska River valley, the monastery served as a crucial preserver of Bulgarian language and culture during centuries of Ottoman rule.
