Mezek Fortress (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Mezek Fortress, also known as Neoutzikon, is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Bulgaria, located on a hill near the village of Mezek close to the Greek border. It was likely constructed in the late 11th or early 12th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos to protect the approaches to Constantinople. The fortress covers an area of approximately 0.7 hectares and features a defensive wall reinforced by nine massive cylindrical towers, reaching heights of up to 10 meters. The masonry utilizes a combination of stone and triple rows of bricks, a characteristic technique of Byzantine military architecture. Throughout the Middle Ages, it served as a strategic military outpost for both the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires. Excavations have revealed traces of barracks and storage facilities within the enclosure. Today, the site is a significant cultural attraction, offering panoramic views over the Thracian plain and insights into medieval engineering.
