Harmanli is located in South-Central Bulgaria within the Haskovo Province, situated in the fertile Maritsa River valley. The town was established in the 16th century around a 'harman' (a large threshing floor) which served as a resting place for caravans traveling between Constantinople and Europe. Historically, it developed as a significant administrative and commercial center during the Ottoman era, benefiting from its strategic location on the ancient Via Diagonalis. In 1835, the town established its first secular school, marking a step towards the Bulgarian National Revival. Today, Harmanli is known for its agricultural production, particularly viticulture and tobacco, and hosts several historical monuments including the 16th-century Gurbet Bridge over the Oluludere River. The local economy is bolstered by its proximity to the Turkish and Greek borders, facilitating international trade and transit.
