Topolovgrad is a town in southeastern Bulgaria, tucked away on the northern slopes of the Sakar Mountains in the Haskovo Province. The town was historically known as Kavakli, meaning 'place of poplars' in Turkish, before being renamed to its current Bulgarian name in 1934. In the early 20th century, Topolovgrad became a major settlement for Bulgarian refugees from Eastern Thrace and Asia Minor, which significantly shaped its cultural identity. Geographically, the area is defined by the Sakar Mountains, a critical habitat for rare birds of prey, including the Eastern Imperial Eagle. The town's surroundings are rich in ancient archaeological sites, particularly Thracian dolmens, which are among the best-preserved megalithic structures in Bulgaria. While tobacco cultivation was the primary economic activity in the past, agriculture and viticulture now dominate the local landscape. The nearby Holy Trinity Monastery serves as a prominent spiritual and cultural landmark for the region.
