💡 Tips
- Visit the Krushuna Waterfalls in spring or early summer when the water flow is at its peak and the vegetation is intensely green.
- Wear sturdy, anti-slip shoes for the eco-trail; the paths and wooden bridges around the waterfalls are constantly wet and can be very slippery.
- Arrive early on weekends (before 10 AM) to secure parking near the entrance and enjoy the waterfalls without the large crowds.
- Bring cash, as the entrance fee booth and the small stalls selling local goods near the park entrance often do not accept credit cards.
🍽 Food
Look for small local stalls near the waterfall entrance selling this delicious, warm fried dough, first-rate for breakfast.
A staple of the region, enjoy it breaded and fried (Kashkaval pane) in one of the nearby guesthouse restaurants.
A very traditional, healthy green soup popular in the nearby villages during the spring season.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Vendors near the waterfall entrance sell excellent honey gathered from the surrounding pristine nature.
Small stalls offer handmade wooden trinkets and magnets featuring the local natural landmarks.
Located near the falls, its entrance area is usually much quieter than the main cascade path.
Just a short drive away, visit late in the afternoon for a quieter, awe-inspiring experience under the massive natural skylights.
Water temperature…
Krushuna is a peaceful village in the Lovech region, world-renowned for the Maarata Nature Park and its impressive travertine waterfalls. These are the largest of their kind in Bulgaria, characterized by turquoise mineral pools and stepped terraces formed by limestone deposits over millennia. A well-maintained eco-trail features wooden bridges and stairs that wind through the lush forest, leading to the 20-meter-high main fall and numerous smaller cascades. The crystal-clear water and spirited green surroundings create a subtropical atmosphere. The area also holds historical significance, as 13th and 14th-century Hesychast monks used the natural rock niches to build hermitages and rock monasteries. Visitors can explore the Maara Cave, where the water originates, and the nearby Devetaki Cave, one of Europe's most impressive karst formations. Today, Krushuna village provides cozy guesthouses and local eateries serving traditional Bulgarian dishes. It has become a favorite spot for eco-tourism and weekend getaways for those seeking tranquility in nature. Krushuna is located about 35 km northeast of Lovech and is best reached by car. The well-suited time to visit is in late spring (April to June) when the waterfalls are at their most powerful and the vegetation is lush. During summer, the shaded paths offer a refreshing microclimate. Don't forget to try the local honey and herbal teas sold by villagers near the park entrance, which are famous throughout the region.
