Krushuna Waterfalls (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Krushuna Waterfalls, also known as Maarata, constitute the largest travertine cascade in Bulgaria, located in the northern part of the country near the village of Krushuna. The water emerges from a karst cave and tumbles down numerous terraces and limestone steps, creating a fairytale landscape of turquoise pools and lush greenery. The main waterfall drops from a height of about 20 meters, splitting into many smaller streams bordered by dense moss and ferns. A well-maintained eco-trail with wooden bridges and stairs allows visitors to climb alongside the falls and enjoy views of the cascading water. The constant deposition of travertine (limestone) ensures that the landscape is ever-changing, with new formations appearing over the decades. In addition to the falls, the area is home to several caves, such as the Boninska Cave, and historical 13th-14th century rock-cut monasteries inhabited by ascetic monks. It is a site of exceptional tranquility and natural beauty, particularly impressive in spring when the water flow is at its peak.
