Devetashka Cave (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Devetashka Cave is one of the largest and most significant karst caves in Bulgaria, located approximately 18 kilometers north of Lovech on the banks of the Osam River. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the cave was inhabited by humans as early as the Middle Paleolithic era, around 70,000 years ago, making it one of Europe's oldest settlement sites. The cave is renowned for its monumental entrance, measuring 35 meters wide and 30 meters high, leading into a massive central hall that covers over 20,400 square meters. The ceiling is punctured by seven large natural openings, known as the eyes, which allow daylight to illuminate the vast interior space. During the Cold War, the cave was repurposed as a secret military facility for fuel storage, and remnants of concrete foundations are still visible on the floor today. Currently, the cave is a strictly protected natural landmark, serving as a vital sanctuary for more than 15 species of bats, with the wintering colony numbering up to 30,000 individuals.
