The name Batenberg historically refers to various locations in Bulgaria named after Alexander I of Battenberg, the first prince of modern Bulgaria following the liberation of 1878. The most prominent example is the village of Tsar Krum near Shumen, which officially bore the name Batenberg between 1884 and 1934. These naming choices were expressions of national pride and gratitude toward the monarch who established the foundations of the new Bulgarian state. In the Pleven region, there were also efforts to name settlements after the prince to honor his leadership during the Siege of Pleven. Today, most of these names have faded into history or were replaced by more patriotic Bulgarian names during the 20th century. The settlements themselves often retain a rural character and are surrounded by fertile agricultural lands that have been farmed for centuries. Archaeologically, these areas are frequently significant, containing traces of Thracian, Roman, and medieval habitation. Visiting these historic sites provides deep insight into the state-building process of modern Bulgaria.
