Eliseina is a historic site for metal processing located within the Iskar Gorge, which defined the region's industrial landscape for decades. The Eliseina JSC copper smelter was established in the early 20th century to process ores extracted from nearby mines in the Balkan Mountains. The factory was famous for its prominent high chimneys, which served as landmarks within the narrow river canyon. For many years, the plant was one of Bulgaria's most significant producers of raw copper and various copper alloys. However, the intensive industrial activity also brought substantial ecological challenges, particularly concerning air quality and the pollution of the Iskar River. Following the end of the planned economy, the site underwent difficult restructuring processes and eventual closures due to outdated technologies. Today, the industrial ruins and remaining workshops stand as a testament to the hard work of generations of local metallurgists. The history of Eliseina serves as a prime example of the rise and the challenging transformation of Bulgarian heavy industry in mountainous terrains.
