Belitsa Bear Park, also known as the Dancing Bears Park, is located in the Rila Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria, about 12 kilometers from the town of Belitsa. It was established in 2000 through the joint efforts of the FOUR PAWS organization and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation. The park's primary mission was to rescue bears previously kept in cruel conditions as dancing bears, a practice that was officially banned in Bulgaria in 2007. Spanning 12 hectares at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,345 meters, the sanctuary provides the animals with a natural habitat featuring dense forests, water pools, and caves for hibernation. The bears receive professional medical care and a proper diet to help them recover from the physical and psychological traumas of their past. Today, the park also functions as an educational center, raising awareness about animal welfare and the conservation of wild fauna.

Best season
The spring and summer months are handy for seeing the bears actively roaming throughout their spacious, naturalistic enclosures. During late autumn and winter, the animals frequently retreat into their dens for hibernation.
Best time of day
Mornings and late afternoons are generally the absolute best times for observations, when temperatures are somewhat more pleasant. During the peak midday heat in summer, the bears often rest well hidden in the undergrowth.
Etiquette
Strictly observe the absolute feeding ban so as not to endanger the appropriate diet and long-term health of the rescued animals. Furthermore, avoid loud noises that could unnecessarily stress the frequently traumatized bears.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for the circular trails traversing the partially hilly terrain of the extensive park. Good binoculars help enormously in observing the bears from a greater distance in retreats.
Getting there
The approach is usually by private car or via organized tours starting from nearby towns like Bansko. The final kilometers to the sanctuary center frequently lead over somewhat narrower, winding mountain roads requiring care.
What to expect
Since the sanctuary is specifically designed to offer the bears an undisturbed life, they do not always reveal themselves immediately. Enjoy the highly informative exhibitions and wait patiently at the observation points.
