Borovets, originally known as Chamkoria, is Bulgaria's oldest mountain resort, established in the late 19th century as a hunting ground for Bulgarian monarchs. Positioned on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains at 1350 meters, it is surrounded by magnificent ancient pine forests. Its proximity to Sofia (70 km) makes it a preferred weekend destination for locals and a major hub for international skiers. It is the primary gateway to Musala Peak (2925 m), the highest point in the Balkans. The resort features three distinct ski centers with runs suitable for everyone from toddlers to professionals. Night skiing is particularly popular here, with several floodlit slopes remaining open late. In the summer months, Borovets transforms into a center for alpine hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking, boasting one of the best bike parks in Southeastern Europe. The gondola lift to Yastrebets provides quick access to high-altitude trails. Historical interest is provided by the Tsarska Bistritsa royal residence, which showcases exquisite woodcarvings and royal memorabilia. Visitors can also use the resort as a base to explore the Rila Monastery or the Seven Rila Lakes. The local dining scene has a mix of international flair and traditional Bulgarian mehanas. The ski season typically lasts from mid-December to April.
