Nicopolis ad Istrum (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Nicopolis ad Istrum is an ancient Roman and Early Byzantine city founded by Emperor Trajan around 101-106 AD to commemorate his victory over the Dacians. The ruins are situated approximately 20 kilometers north of Veliko Tarnovo, near the confluence of the Rositsa and Yantra rivers. Planned according to the Hippodamian grid system with orthogonal streets, the city featured a forum, an odeon, thermal baths, and a monumental agora. A particularly remarkable feature is its sophisticated water supply system, which included a 25-kilometer-long aqueduct. During the reign of Septimius Severus, the city reached its peak of economic and cultural prosperity. Following incursions by Goths and Huns, it was partially rebuilt in the 6th century under Justinian I before being permanently abandoned in the early 7th century. Today, it remains one of the most thoroughly excavated Roman urban centers in northern Bulgaria.
