Seria is a town in the Belait District of Brunei and the commercial heart of the nation's oil and gas industry. The town's history is inextricably linked to the discovery of oil in 1929, which led to the establishment of the settlement centered around the operations of Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP). The name 'Seria' is derived from the river's original name, 'Sungai Seria'. The iconic Billionth Barrel Monument was erected in 1991 to celebrate the production of the billionth barrel of oil from the Seria oilfield. The town suffered significant damage during World War II but was rapidly rebuilt in the post-war period. Today, Seria is a well-planned town with amenities that cater to its diverse population, including a large expatriate community.
