Discovered in 1929, the Seria field is considered the cradle of Brunei’s modern economy and has been the primary driver of the nation’s development. The monument is situated on the coast of the South China Sea, near the exact location where the milestone barrel was pumped. Its architectural design is deeply symbolic, featuring six arched pillars that converge at the top to support the national emblem of Brunei. These six arches represent the six decades of oil exploration and production that took place before the monument’s completion. Commissioned by Brunei Shell Petroleum and designed by a local architect, the site is surrounded by active 'nodding donkey' oil pumps, illustrating the ongoing industrial activity in the region.
