Kuala Belait is the second-largest city in Brunei Darussalam and serves as the administrative capital of the Belait District. The city is situated at the mouth of the Belait River on the country's western border, near the frontier with the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Its development is intrinsically linked to the discovery of oil and natural gas in the 1920s, which transformed Brunei into one of Asia's wealthiest nations. Today, Kuala Belait remains a major hub for the oil and gas industry, particularly for Brunei Shell Petroleum, which has its main operations centered in the nearby town of Seria. The city's architecture reflects a mix of modern prosperity and colonial heritage, featuring well-maintained parks and residential areas for government officials and industry workers. Notable landmarks include the Silver Jubilee Park, built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's accession to the throne. The town also serves as a vital transit point for travelers moving overland between Brunei and the city of Miri in Malaysia.
