Located on the coast of the Belait District, Lumut is a key community known for its pivotal role in Brunei's natural gas industry. The most significant facility in the area is the Brunei Liquefied Natural Gas (BLNG) plant, one of the largest LNG plants in the world. Established in 1972, the plant was a pioneer in the LNG industry and has been a major contributor to Brunei's economic prosperity. The plant cools natural gas to -162°C to turn it into liquid form for transportation by ship. The settlement of Lumut itself has developed to support the plant and its workers, hosting residential areas, schools, and recreational facilities like the Liang Lumut Recreation Club. The area is also home to the Sungai Liang Forest Recreational Park, which provides a glimpse into the region's rich tropical rainforest.
