The Brunei Methanol Plant, operated by the Brunei Methanol Company (BMC), is a significant downstream gas project located in the SPARK industrial park. Commissioned in 2010, the plant is a joint venture between Japanese companies (Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Itochu Corporation) and the Brunei National Petroleum Company (PetroleumBRUNEI). It was developed to convert Brunei's natural gas resources into a higher-value product. The plant has a production capacity of 850,000 metric tonnes of methanol per year. All of the methanol produced is exported to the international market, used as a chemical feedstock or a fuel component. BMC was one of the first major economic diversification projects in Brunei and has paved the way for further petrochemical investments in the country. The plant utilizes advanced technology provided by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.

What is this place?
The Brunei Methanol Plant is a large facility in the SPARK industrial park producing methanol for global export. It contributes significantly to Brunei's gross national income and strengthens its position as an energy and chemical hub.
Visiting
For safety reasons, the methanol plant is not open to the public. It can be viewed from the outside along the SPARK park perimeter fence.
Where to view it
From the main access road to SPARK park, there is a good view of the plant's columns and reactors. The sprawling facility is also visible from the coastal road near Kuala Belait.
Local products
Methanol itself is a chemical feedstock and is not sold directly to consumers. However, methanol derivatives such as denatured alcohol or cleaning products are available in nearby petrol stations and shops.
Active season
Production runs continuously, as methanol as a basic chemical is in demand year-round. Planned maintenance typically occurs every 3-4 years and is announced in advance.
