Pedra da Gávea (Brazil)

Weather…

Pedra da Gávea is a massive monolith of gneiss and granite in Rio de Janeiro, rising 842 meters directly from the Atlantic coast. It ranks as one of the highest mountains in the world that ends directly in the ocean and is a prominent part of the Tijuca National Park. Its name was bestowed by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, who noted that its flat top resembled the topsail (gávea) of a carrack. One side of the mountain features a rock formation that looks like a giant human face, giving rise to local legends about Phoenician inscriptions and tombs, though geologists attribute these features to natural erosion. Hiking to the summit is considered the most challenging trek in the city, requiring rock climbing skills to navigate sections like the 'Carrasqueira.' The peak provides an unparalleled panoramic view of Barra da Tijuca, São Conrado, and Rio's southwestern coastline.

📅
Best season
Generally best climbed during the cooler, drier months from May to August to avoid extreme tropical heat. Early morning starts are highly recommended to escape the fierce midday sun.

🎒
What to bring
Requires proper hiking boots with excellent grip, plenty of drinking water, and reliable sun protection. Some hikers generally prefer climbing harnesses and ropes for the exposed rock.
