Teresópolis, often simply called "Terê," is one of the pleasant mountain towns in the state of Rio de Janeiro and once served as the summer residence of the Brazilian imperial family. The city's main attraction is the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, world-renowned for its dramatic, needle-shaped granite peaks. The most prominent of these peaks is the Dedo de Deus (Finger of God), whose silhouette resembles a hand pointing straight into the sky. The city provides a welcome escape from the heat of the coastline and attracts hikers, mountaineers, and nature lovers year-round. Besides the demanding outdoor activities, Teresópolis has a cozy town center where half-timbered houses and European-inspired architecture define the streetscape. On weekends, a huge handicraft and clothing market, the Feirinha de Teresópolis, takes over the central square. Culinary-wise, the mountainous region is known for hearty cuisine, winter fondues, and local craft breweries, such as the famous Vila St. Gallen. The city is located about 90 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro and can be reached in just under two hours via a scenic, winding mountain road. The dry winter months from May to September offer the best conditions for mountain hiking and clear views of the peaks.
