Historic Center of Paraty (Brazil)

Weather…

The historic center of Paraty is an exceptional example of a colonial port city located on the Costa Verde in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Founded in the 17th century, it was the essential port for shipping gold brought from Minas Gerais along the "Caminho Velho" (Old Road). A unique feature of Paraty is its street design, which allows high tides to flood the cobblestone paths intentionally to clean the city, a historical sanitation method. The architecture is strictly preserved, featuring white-walled buildings with vibrantly colored door and window frames. In 2019, Paraty and its surrounding Atlantic Forest were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the rare "mixed" category for both cultural and natural value. The city center is largely car-free, maintaining the colonial tranquility of its uneven stone streets. Beyond its history, Paraty is famous for its traditional cachaça distilleries and the international literary festival FLIP. Its four historic churches reflect the colonial social hierarchy, as each was built for a different social class of the era.
