Tower of Gradačac (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Tower of Gradačac, affectionately known as the Tower of the Dragon of Bosnia (Kula Zmaja od Bosne), is the preeminent historical monument of northern Bosnia and the undisputed symbol of the city of Gradačac. It was built in 1824 by Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, a charismatic local commander who led the legendary Bosnian uprising against the Ottoman Empire in a quest for Bosnian autonomy. The fortress complex is majestically situated on a hilltop and is encircled by massive stone defensive walls, some measuring more than a meter thick. The main tower reaches a height of roughly 18 meters and originally served as a vital military observation and defensive post, offering clear lines of sight stretching for miles across the flat Posavina valley. The stronghold also features an 1824 clock tower (Sahat-kula). Today, the meticulously preserved castle is a highly popular tourist attraction, hosting a traditional Bosnian restaurant in the upper floors of the tower. Visitors climbing the narrow stairs are rewarded with an incomparable panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
