Brod Oil Refinery (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The refinery in Brod, located directly on the state border with Croatia on the banks of the Sava River, is the only crude oil refinery in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina and thus of immense strategic importance for the country's energy supply. Its origins date back to the year 1892 when it was founded during the Austro-Hungarian era. The main task of the facility is the primary and secondary processing of crude oil, which is primarily delivered via the Croatian JANAF pipeline network, into fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and heating oil. Following the destruction of the 1990s, the facility was extensively rebuilt and taken over in 2007 by the Russian state-owned company Zarubezhneft. Production has frequently been plagued by financial and technical problems in recent years, but the refinery remains a crucial factor for independence from fuel imports in the region.

Where to view it
The dramatic industrial skyline can be distinctly observed from the public roads running parallel to the Sava River. Looking across from the neighboring Croatian side often provides the most panoramic and spectacular view of the entire plant.
🧺
Local products
Tourists will not find direct retail opportunities or souvenir shops at this heavy industrial site. However, the refined petroleum products originating from here reliably fuel the vehicles and infrastructure used by travelers across the nation.
📆
Active season
Petrochemical refining demands a constant, round-the-clock operational pace, meaning the facility is active and illuminated every day of the year. The imposing visual impact is particularly striking during the glowing twilight and evening hours.
Nearby
A stop to view the refinery pairs intriguingly with a border crossing journey between Croatia and Bosnia. Nature enthusiasts can quickly pivot from this industrial monolith to enjoy the tranquil riverside environments further along the Sava.
