Tharpaling Monastery (Bhutan)

Weather…

Tharpaling Monastery, which translates to the 'Place of Liberation', is a high-altitude monastic complex situated in the Chumey Valley of Bumthang. It was founded in the 14th century by Longchen Rabjam (Longchenpa), one of the most celebrated scholars and masters of the Nyingma school of Himalayan Buddhism. Perched on a steep mountainside at an elevation of approximately 3,600 meters, the monastery commands dramatic views of the valley below. Tharpaling is historically significant as a major center for advanced Buddhist philosophy and long-term meditation retreats. The complex consists of several temples, including Tharpaling Lhakhang and the nearby Choedrak temple, which is built into a rock face even higher up the ridge. Inside, the shrines are adorned with delicate murals and statues of Longchenpa and Guru Rinpoche. The serene environment, surrounded by rhododendron forests and alpine meadows, enhances its reputation as a sanctuary for spiritual seekers. Over the centuries, many prominent lamas have spent years here in solitude to master the Dzogchen teachings. Today, it continues to be a vital institution for religious education and a revered pilgrimage site for devotees across Bhutan.
