The Zhemgang Valley, located in the heart of the Kheng region in south-central Bhutan, is one of the country's most biodiverse and least developed areas. The valley is deeply incised and covers a wide altitudinal range, resulting in a variety of climate zones, from subtropical lowland forests to cool temperate forests. Much of the district falls within Royal Manas National Park, Bhutan's oldest national park and a biodiversity hotspot. It is home to rare and endangered species such as the Royal Bengal tiger, the Asian elephant, the greater one-horned rhinoceros, and the golden langur. The region is the homeland of the Khengpa people, one of Bhutan's oldest ethnic groups, with their own distinct language and rich shamanistic traditions. Due to the rugged terrain, development has been limited, which has helped preserve the region's unique culture and pristine natural environment.

Getting there
Zhemgang Valley is accessed via the Gelephu-Trongsa highway, a winding mountain road that leads deep into south-central Bhutan. Due to its remote location and often challenging road conditions, an experienced driver and a sturdy vehicle are essential for safely navigating the steep valley slopes and narrow cliff-side passes.
Best season
The best time for birdwatching and exploring is from October to March, when the weather is drier and visibility through the dense jungle canopy is at its best. During the summer months, the monsoon brings heavy rainfall, which often leads to road closures from landslides and creates very high humidity in the subtropical zones.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is exceptionally steep, defined by deeply incised valleys and dense, impenetrable jungle that stretches down to the lower elevations. Significant vertical relief within the valley results in a vast array of ecological zones, but also makes trekking off the established tracks very physically demanding and difficult.
What to bring
Essential gear includes lightweight yet durable clothing, hiking boots with excellent grip, and leech socks if visiting during or after rainy spells. As Zhemgang is a premier destination for wildlife photography, binoculars and a camera with a strong zoom lens are indispensable for spotting rare species like the golden langur.
Parking
Formal parking areas are scarce; vehicles are typically left at the few available guesthouses in Zhemgang town or at wider shoulder points along the main highway. Since most travel is conducted via organized tours, the Bhutanese driver will generally handle finding a secure spot for the vehicle during any excursions.
Safety
Caution is advised on steep slopes, slippery trails after rain, and regarding potential encounters with wildlife such as elephants or bears in the thick undergrowth. Travelers should also be mindful of the sometimes extreme road conditions and allow ample time for travel, as mountain distances take much longer than expected.
Time needed
A stay of 2 to 4 days is recommended to truly appreciate the valley's unique biodiversity and to explore the different altitudinal zones. Given the long travel time from Bhutan's main entry points, it is rarely worthwhile to visit this remote southern region for anything less than a dedicated multi-day excursion.
