Trongsa Dzong
Trongsa Dzong is the largest and most imposing fortress in Bhutan, serving as the administrative and religious center of Trongsa District. Built in 1648 on a steep rocky spur, it historically controlled the only trade route between western and eastern Bhutan. Its strategic position was vital for the unification of the country, as no traveler could bypass the mountain pass without passing through the dzong. Trongsa is the ancestral home of the Wangchuck dynasty; by tradition, the Crown Prince is appointed as the Penlop (Governor) of Trongsa before ascending the throne. The architecture is a masterpiece of Bhutanese craftsmanship, featuring a labyrinth of courtyards, corridors, and 25 distinct temples. The massive walls and overhanging roofs offer sweeping views over the Mangde Chhu gorge. Within the complex, precious religious artifacts and historical documents are preserved, detailing the political evolution of the kingdom. The annual Trongsa Tsechu festival is a major cultural event, attracting pilgrims from all over the nation.
