Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve (Bhutan)

Weather…

The Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve, formerly known as the Toorsa Strict Nature Reserve, is Bhutan's only protected area with the status of 'Strict Nature Reserve.' It covers 609 square kilometers in the western district of Haa and borders Sikkim in India. The unique feature of this reserve is that it is completely free of human settlement or economic activity. It was established to preserve the pristine temperate and alpine ecosystems of western Bhutan in their natural state. The reserve protects the headwaters of the Amo Chhu (Torsa) river and a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare species like the red panda. The landscape is characterized by dense forests of fir, birch, and rhododendron, as well as high-alpine meadows. It serves as an important reference area for scientific research on the state of Himalayan ecosystems.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This strict nature reserve is often closed to regular tourism or only accessible with special permits from the environmental authorities. Any visits must be strictly coordinated through official agencies well in advance of the trip.
📅
Best season
If permits are granted, the late spring months or early autumn are best suited for admiring the unique and undisturbed alpine flora. The heavy monsoon rains in summer often make the access routes completely impassable and dangerous.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The reserve is characterized by untouched and extremely impassable landscapes without any tourist infrastructure whatsoever. Visitors can expect a rugged, wild terrain that is suitable only for highly experienced expedition members.
🎒
What to bring
Since there are no supply facilities whatsoever, all equipment, from expedition tents to all food, must be brought with you. High-quality orientation tools and satellite phones are absolutely essential for such remote undertakings.
🅿️
Parking
Any motorized travel ends well before the boundaries of the reserve in authorized base camps, as there are no roads inside. Parking is therefore only possible in the very last civilized settlement on your designated travel route.
⚠️
Safety
This is an absolutely isolated area with no human settlements; rescue operations can take days and be extremely costly. Strict adherence to the instructions of government-appointed guides is quite literally a matter of survival.
⏱️
Time needed
Approved scientific or photographic expeditions into this remote nature reserve usually last anywhere from one to two weeks. A short day trip is almost completely out of the question due to the enormous logistical hurdles involved.
