The Palace of the Prince-Bishops (Palais des Princes-Évêques) in Liège is an architectural masterpiece and the historic seat of power of the independent Principality of Liège. The imposing building complex, which dominates the Place Saint-Lambert, was constructed in its current form in the 16th century under the initiative of Cardinal Érard de La Marck, following the destruction of earlier palaces by fires and wars. The architecture is a fascinating blend of late Gothic elements and emerging Renaissance influences. The absolute centerpiece of the palace is its magnificent main courtyard, surrounded by a gallery featuring 60 unique, richly decorated columns. Each intricately carved capital displays individual motifs inspired by the discoveries in the New World and the writings of Erasmus of Rotterdam. After the Prince-Bishops were expelled during the French Revolution, the state took control of the building. Today, the historic complex houses both the Palace of Justice and the headquarters of the provincial government of Liège.
