The Atlantic Wall at Raversyde near Ostend is one of the best-preserved defense lines from both World Wars in Europe. This open-air museum comprises more than 60 bunkers, observation posts, and batteries connected by a two-kilometer network of trenches and tunnels. Visitors can experience two distinct eras here: the Aachen Battery from World War I and the Saltzwedel-neu Battery from World War II. The site impressively demonstrates military engineering and the enormous effort expended on coastal protection. Authentic furnishings, weapons, and equipment provide a realistic glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers within the bunker systems. Beyond its military history, the location is closely associated with Prince Charles of Belgium, who lived here in seclusion after his regency. His former residence is also part of the estate and can be visited. The site additionally has expansive views over the North Sea coast, embedding dark history within a scenic dune landscape.
