Yser (Belgium)

Weather…

The Yser (Dutch: IJzer) is a tranquil river in the Belgian province of West Flanders, holding a unique geographical distinction: it is the only river in Belgium that flows directly into the North Sea, without passing through the neighboring Netherlands, reaching the sea at Nieuwpoort. Over its approximately 78-kilometer course, which begins in northern France, the Yser meanders through the flat, expansive polder landscapes of the Westhoek region. The river gained worldwide historical significance during World War I in the 1914 Battle of the Yser. To halt the advance of enemy troops, Belgian defenders heroically opened the sluice gates at Nieuwpoort to the North Sea, deliberately flooding the entire Yser plain. Today, the river valley stands as a symbol of peace and a vital nature reserve. The broad floodplains, known as the Yserbroeken, attract tens of thousands of Arctic migratory birds during the winter and offer idyllic, completely flat cycling routes.
