Diksmuide is a historic city in West Flanders, profoundly shaped by its pivotal role during the First World War. Situated along the River IJzer, the city was systematically reduced to rubble during the Battle of the Yser in 1914, where Belgian forces halted the German advance by flooding the surrounding lowlands. Following the conflict, Diksmuide was meticulously rebuilt in its original Flemish style, preserving its medieval layout and grand market square. The city's skyline is dominated by the IJzertoren (Yser Tower), an 84-meter-high peace monument and museum that commemorates the fallen and symbolizes Flemish emancipation. Nearby, the 'Dodengang' (Trench of Death) remains as a stark reminder of the brutal trench warfare endured by Belgian soldiers for four years. Today, Diksmuide is also celebrated for its high-quality agricultural products, particularly its renowned butter and cheese. The surrounding polder landscape and the De Blankaart nature reserve make it a popular destination for eco-tourism and cycling in the Westhoek region.
