💡 Tips
- Hop on the coastal tram (Kusttram); the historic Belle Époque De Haan station is a beautiful attraction in its own right.
- Pick up a map from the tourist office to spot the protected Anglo-Norman style villas scattered through the Concessie district.
- The wide beachfront can be quite windy-rent a traditional canvas windbreak (strandzeil) from beach vendors to sit comfortably.
- Rent a multi-person pedal go-kart (cuisse-tax) to playfully cruise along the wide, flat sea promenades.
🍽 Food
A Belgian coast classic. Try these crispy North Sea shrimp croquettes at the brasseries dotted along the seafront.
Stop by one of the traditional tearooms in the pleasant town center for a freshly baked Brussels or Liège waffle.
A staple during the season (months with an 'r'), best served steaming in a pot at local seafood restaurants.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Take a stroll here to find pleasant local fashion and home decor boutiques rather than large international chain stores.
Pick up artisanal chocolates and freshly baked butter biscuits from the town center bakeries for a well-suited edible souvenir.
A beautiful wooded area situated right behind the sand dunes, offering a peaceful and wind-sheltered nature walk.
Hike up to the highest dune point featuring a small, historic pavilion that grants wonderful panoramic views of the coastline.

De Haan is widely regarded as the most pleasant resort on the Belgian coast, preserving its historic character in the "Concession" villa district. Unlike other coastal towns, it lacks high-rise buildings, opting instead for manicured gardens and white villas with red-tiled roofs. Albert Einstein lived here for six months in 1933 before emigrating to the USA. The historic tram station from 1902 is an architectural gem that still connects the town to the coastal tram network today. Visitors enjoy the wide sandy beach and the surrounding wooded dunes, which are first-rate for long walks or cycling trips. The Royal Golf Club of Belgium, one of the oldest in the country, features world-class facilities. Gastronomically, the town is famous for its shrimp croquettes and fresh North Sea fish. The best time to visit is from June to September, when the maritime climate is mild and cultural events like the "Belle Époque Night" take place.
