Kortrijk is a welcoming and historically rich city in the Flemish province of West Flanders, picturesquely situated on the banks of the Leie River. The city gained historical fame through the "Battle of the Golden Spurs" (Guldensporenslag) on July 11, 1302, in which a Flemish infantry army defeated a French knightly army, a key moment in Flemish identity that is celebrated annually. For centuries, Kortrijk flourished due to the linen and textile industry, supported by the soft water of the Leie, which was handy for retting flax. The rich past is reflected in the cityscape: the medieval Broel Towers on the Leie are the symbol of the city. Also worth seeing is the exceptionally well-preserved Beguinage, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, Kortrijk is a modern, design-oriented university city that is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Design.
